Work

I am a system administrator and audio engineer for Sovereign Grace Ministries, a family of Reformed charismatic churches. Sovereign Grace is primarily devoted to planting and caring for churches. We also hold conferences, train leaders, and publish books, music, and audio and video messages. I spend some of my time in our recording studio and some of it running around making the PCs and Macs work better. I also record the teaching sessions at many of the Sovereign Grace conferences.

For almost 7 years, I worked for UUNET (now part of the MCI/WorldCom Borg) as a systems programmer and manager of development for Unix-based Web server hosting. That included writing, configuring, and customizing software, designing and writing database applications, maintaining the operating system, fixing mysterious problems, analyzing billing data, and pointing out that profitability isn't a bad thing. I joined UUNET when it was still a privately-held independent company.

In my previous revisions I worked for the Free Software Foundation, Cygnus (now a part of Red Hat), and Environmental Defense (back when they were called a Fund). I wrote and maintained system utilities and software configuration tools (e.g., Autoconf) for the GNU Project. They are used in Linux, BSD, Cygwin, and other systems.

Some open source software I worked on is available on this web server.

While in school at the University of Maryland I helped design and build a large-scale integrated networked environment called GLUE on the engineering workstations. Eventually I graduated. Before that, I was at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where as a student staff programmer I learned C and Unix (4.2BSD on a VAX 11/780).

Non-Work

A lot of my time is spent with my wife Bridgette. Yay! You can look at some pictures of us and our families. There aren't thumbnails yet, so be prepared to wait awhile for them all to load.

I enjoy playing guitar and have played and recorded demos with a rock band and a folk band. I have played guitar, mandolin, and bass in worship bands for my church, but now I mainly do sound mixing for church and lead worship in my home group.

I also enjoy camping, hiking, mountain biking, volleyball, street hockey, playing with kids, baking (using some of my Dad's recipes), collecting jokes and making horrible puns. I like reading, especially witty, insightful cartoons like Tintin and Dilbert, and history books. I have some random bits of computer lore collected. If God had a home page I'd put in a link there. Someone put this together, which will have to do.

Rework

Here's what I used to look like, and my Usenix FaceSaver picture from 1996.

Hey, you can even send me email... as if I had to ask for more!
